Contributes to the development of emotional intelligence (EQ)

What is an emotion coaching parenting style?

It’s a parenting style based on listening empathically in a supportive connective relationship.

How would becoming an emotion coaching parent help my teenager?

Becoming an emotion coach helps you extend and develop further skills to deal in an efficient manner with your teenager based on deepening connections, emotional attunement and developing problem solving skills.

Why does the program focus on working on emotions?

Emotions are central for communication and connection. Learning to become aware, manage and learn about others emotions helps improve our wellbeing and maximise our social, behavioural and learning outcomes. Focusing on emotions contributes to develop social-emotional competencies.

Why are social emotional competencies important during adolescence?

Research has found that teens that have social emotional competencies have fewer problems with depression, anxiety or behaviour. They also are important in developing friendships, resolving conflicts, are able to concentrate better during learning, seeking support and achieving goals. These becomes the foundation for Emotional Intelligence in adulthood.

How does emotional competence/intelligence develop?

It develops through the interaction between an individual’s innate temperament, cognitive development and socialisation with adult significant figures in the teen’s life. Socialisation experiences are the way parents, teachers or other adults offer understanding to the teen about emotions and how to deal with them.

What role does parenting play in developing social-emotional competence?

There is ample evidence that there is a link between parent socialisation practices and teens emotional competence. Parents influence teens by acknowledging, discussing, empathising modelling and accepting teens emotions.

How can I help develop in my teen social-emotional competencies?

You can help your teenager by becoming an EMOTION COACH through The Tuning in to Teens” parenting program created by Dr. Havighurst, Ed Harley & Dr Kehoe from the University of Melbourne which has been successful increasing awareness, acceptance and understanding in families strengthening relationships and reporting decreased conflict and calmer households.
